A Peek at the Hottest Cars of 2011

Posted: Nov 26, 2010 4:04 PM PST Updated: Nov 26, 2010 4:04 PM PST

LAS VEGAS —  If a new car is on your Christmas wish list and you dread going from one car lot to another, the Motor Trend International Auto Show is the place to be this weekend.

Hundreds of vehicles, from cost-saving hybrids to sports cars, are on display. The auto show opens every year on Black Friday. It’s a car browsing experience with no pressure to buy.

“The automotive industry is revving up. People are excited about new technology,” said Lauren Holzman, Motor Trend International Auto Show.

The latest 2011 models are featured at the show including cars that will put the brakes on your fueling frustrations. If you’re ready to replace your gas guzzler with a hybrid, the all new Chevy Volt, Motor Trend’s Car of the Year, makes its Las Vegas debut. Ford, Cadillac and Toyota also showcase alternative fuel vehicles and there is even a Rolls Royce Ghost.

“If you’re in the market for something special to put under your tree,” said Mas Namik, Towbin Motorcars. It’s only a mere $314,000 and the world famous hood ornament is theft proof.

The show goes will run through the weekend from 9 a.m.  to 7 p.m. Tickets are $8, or free at Subway sandwich shops.

Congratulations to LV Chapter’s Charleston Penesa’s EVO IX for being shown in the event coverage on page 024. Lastly, PAS said on pgs 020-024, “…Team Hybrid are currently at the head of the pack when it comes to the hottest show cars, and we’ve featured many of the great builds from all three teams in the pages of PAS Magazine…. Not to be outdone, Team Hybrid’s Scion xA and xD which were built for the Scion Challenge at SEMA ’06 and ’07 remain as some of the hottest Scion’s in the area, showing how far ahead of the scene the team was when they built these two cars.”

Import Tuner October 2010 – 2dr EVO Mirage

Congratulations to Archie Concon’s Mitsubishi 2dr EVO Mirage in a 6 page full feature in Import Tuner Magazine October 2010 issue, pgs 062-66. Title of Article is called, “Dust Devil. How does an Evolution coupe sound?”

Archie said in the article, “Like a lot of builds, this has been something of an ongoing project… A few fully built show rides later and, “I joined Team Hybrid in 2007, and picked up this Mirage to build as a race and show car.”

Import Tuner wrote, “Concon is director of Team Hybrid’s Las Vegas chapter. “Being a part of Team Hybrid means having to trust the Hybrid formula and over 15 years of tradition. We cover all aspects of the build.” Today, it’s about bringing performance back to the streets, in functional Team Hybrid style.”

Import Tuner also wrote, “The Team Hybrid formula seems to have worked big time for Concon. His once-unassuming Mirage has won 18 awards, was used for Manley Racing’s 2010 catalog, and has made several appearances at the SEMA show.”

These paragraphs in the article were written by Colin Ryan and not someone in Team Hybrid. This is what happens when the industry knows their history, understands the importance and the effects we have had and continue to have in the industry. We are respected on the competition battle grounds (race-street-show) and also, in print by our peers/professionals because History + Tradition + Formula + Innovation + Records + Morals + Ethics + Archie = Team Hybrid, 15 years and counting…

Like I said many times before, anyone can put a team or group together, represent and maybe win here & there, but until the industry and your fellow peers validates you especially in print or your team/group as an entire unit win at the highest level and against the industries best esp. year after year after year, then your just in another team/group chasing dreams. This same philosophy can be applied to members too, but Archie has already validated his place in import history with this beautiful published spread in October 2010 issue of IT (Archie’s 7th feature in mags). Another promise kept and came true for our Hybrid Family (7th full feature of 2010 articles for the team & counting…).

Team Hybrid EVO IX Lands PAS Feature

Charleston Panesa and his 2006 Mitsubishi EVO IX with AMSOIL under the hood has been turning heads in the tuner scene for some time now. A member of Team Hybrid based out of California, Panesa recently landed a feature article in Performance Auto & Sound Magazine titled Generation Nine.

Team Hybrid consists of a group of close-knit enthusiasts who share the same passion for cars, with the philosophy of creating vehicles with total package capabilities: Race-Street-Show. They all know what it takes to make a star in a scene where competition is rampant.

Panesa started his EVO IX project with the goal of creating a show car that could still hold its own as a street car. He succeeded, turning this show-worthy ride into a daily driver capable of over 500-awhp. That much horsepower on a street car alone earns him respect, in addition to the many tweaks and mods that make this EVO IX so unique. He uses E85 fuel, which has major advantages to tuner owners with increased horsepower, lowered cooling charge temps, and reduced emissions. The modification list is extensive, with everything from the inside out redesigned to make it the stunner it is today. From the wide-body kit with its gleaming Tangelo Pearl paint to the explosive sound system installed, it looks every bit the part of a winning show car.

Tuner owners seek out only the best products to stand out and enhance performance, which is how AMSOIL came to be the lubricant of choice for Panesa. We’ll be keeping up with Team Hybrid as they continue solidifying their reputation as a leader in the tuner market.

2010 SPOCOM SUPER SHOW LONG BEACH
by: Jacob Leveton
7/22/2010

In August of 2007, the SpoCom show was born amid much fanfare and promise of greatness in the same Long Beach Convention Center that gave birth to the former Import Auto Salon produced by SEMA, a past event that also set out to showcase the growing sport compact tuning side of the aftermarket industry. Now in its fourth year, the show has continued to grow, in car count, attendance, and number of events this year (for the first time, SpoCom expanded beyond Long Beach to host events in San Mateo, Calif., and Honolulu, Hawaii), marking another year of growth despite declines in other sectors of the industry.

From the first steps inside to the Long Beach Convention Center on July 18, it was clear that this show was going to be one of the best. It’s very typical to see “trailer queens” next to full fledged race cars, with everything in between.

Speaking of car show circles, the teams of the car show world are well known and well decorated. Team Hybrid, TWC, and Auto Concept Elite have fueled a fierce rivalry both in Southern California and abroad. All three brought out some of their biggest and best cars to the SpoCom show, showcasing all makes and models.

Team Hybrid’s display was fronted by the pair of Scions built for various build-offs at SEMA (the Gold 2006 xA won the challenge in 2006, while the green xD won the 2007 competition).

Title of Article: Generation Nine
Written by: Dave Pankew & Photos By: RCH Designs

Want to see where the trend in car modifications is going? Well, look no further than this Team Hybrid EVO 9. The mission statement behind this build was simple: make a sick looking Evo that could hold its own at shows and still be a street car. This is no trailer queen, but rather a daily driver that throws down over 500awhp on pump gas! As with any daily it has all of the luxuries and gadgetry onboard as well as a fully appointed interior.

(Tuners that understand how to maximize E85 have great gains and at 505awhp and 481lb-ft of twist, this Evo is no exception)

Owner Charleston Penesa of Las Vegas, NV realized that to have the functionality of a sedan with outrageous street-able power, he didn’t have to look further than the Evo. Well known for outgunning exotics on the circuit, the Evo is an ideal mod choice and with that, Penesa stepped it up. The 4G63 motor was pulled and filled with new gear including BC pistons, rods and crankshaft. The head was ported, polished and filled with a completed BC valvetrain and a pair of 280º cams. Penesa sided with a 3076R turbo kit from long-time Mitsubishi specialist Buschur Racing. Air is hauled in using and HKS super suction intake and chilled with an HKS front mount connected up with RMR piping and vented by a Forge BOV. Post-combustion, the gases head into an HKS downpipe, Ultimate Racing test pipe and an HKS Carbon Titanium exhaust.

Using a flashed EVO IX PCM, the results were impressive. The fuel system has been set up to use E85 ethanol available at many pumps, which burns much cooler than conventional RCH_1346_thgas. Tuners that understand how to maximize E85 have great gains and at 505awhp and 481lb-ft of twist, this Evo is no exception. All that extra jam meant that Mitsubishi OEM clutch would tap out and therefore had to be replaced. A SPEC Super Twin Disc clutch was added, but the balance is all Mitsu!

alt

While the Evo is blessed with unreal natural abilities, there is always room for upgrades. Penesa started with a set of Endura-Tech 10-way adjustable coilover suspension using 7kg and 5kg springs. A pair of Cusco sway bars was added to the project along with GReddy strut bars to brace the chassis. The factory rubber bushings were all pressed out and replaced with Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings.

alt

All of the suspension mods benefited from the amount of rubber Penesa added and the reduction in rotating mass. He sourced a set of Rays Gram Lights in 18×10-inches with a sizable +15 offset. The lightweight forged alloys were wrapped in a set of BFGoodrich R1 tires measuring 275/35R18. Lurking behind the white spokes are Rotora 6-piston front calipers with 355mm rotors up front and 4-piston rear calipers with 330mm rotors in the rear. Rotora carbon compound racing pads were fitted to all four corners and the Rotora stainless steel brake lines were filled with Amsoil Synthetic brake fluid.

alt

Since the car still is pulled off the road every other weekend to attend shows, it had to look the part. Penesa installed an APR Performance EVIL-R wide body kit along with an APR front diffuser and drenched the project in several coats of Tangelo Pearl. A Seibon carbon fiber hood and trunk were added along with a Carbon8 full carbon fiber roof panel. The final touches were some JDM Evo7 headlights and taillights along with some RalliART carbon fiber mirrors.

alt

Inside the cabin, the upgrades just kept coming. Penesa added a pair of Bride Vios Low Max seats draped with Race Tech 4-point harnesses. Several interior panels were recovered in rich, red suede to highlight the interior. The occupants are surrounded by a Cusco 6-point roll cage finished in a ‘Takata Green’ paint job. Steering inputs are made with a Nardi 350mm deep corn steering wheel with and NRG 3.0 quick-release connected to an NRG short hub.

Penesa with the help of Team Hybrid’s Founder/President, James Lin then secured a sponsorship deal with electronics powerhouse Sony, to add some of their Xplod gear. Penesa’s installer/fellow Team Hybrid member, Tom Milroy, made some room for the Sony XAV-60 double DIN unit complete with navigation and Sony rearview camera. The lows absolutely pound with a trio of Sony Xplod XM-ZZR3301class D mono amplifiers individually wired to three Sony Xplod 10-inch XS-LD106P5 subwoofers in custom trunk enclosures. The mids and highs are powered by twin Sony Xplod XM-ZR704 4-3-2-channel amplifiers pushing two Sony Xplod GTX1621S speakers and two XS-GT1626A speakers. The elaborate presentation in the trunk also includes two Sony XVM-B62 LCD monitors and a load of color-match fiberglass work. The system is lit up by an Optima Yellow Top connected with Stinger wires, fuse box and 2 Farad capacitors.

alt

A street car that can embarrass exotics costing ten times the price is really what it is all about. No one wants a car you can use and abuse these days, and sacrificing comfort for weight savings is a thing of the past. Add more gadgets, make more power, its all very possible today. Penesa is an example of what enthusiasts want today & Team Hybrid’s Philosophy – the total package of Race-Street-Show.
